This CD from the Leipzig based duo Herbst 9 is particular in several way. First, it's a very impressive album for a debut. And, then, it brings a somehow new dimension to its style: dark industrial with an oriental edge. Very low bass backgrounds are layed over with slow orchestral melodies and a lot of voice or ambient noises samples taken from movies. Without being oppressive or aggressive, Herbst 9's sound is dense and solid. The heavy dosis of effects used, as well as the richness of the samples brings a lot of diversity to the music. And, then, some of the percussions or melodies, as well as a part of the voices have a Far East feeling that gives to this "From a dark chasm below" a personality of its own. This is particularely clear with "The snake of Saigon",the following "In the vein of Purusa", and "Manvantara". Signed on Loki foundation, Herbst 9 share their slow and coherent heavy ambient style to their label-mates Inade. But they approach it with less saturation, replacing it with several layers of low pitch melodies, choir, or distant noises.
