HERBST9
:Eta Carinae: (CD LOKI)
The second release by Herbst9, following the brilliant From A Dark Chasm
Below, casts a dimmer light, shifting the perspective, focusing on the
sub-currents of cryptic, hallucinatory discomfort, and a subtly strangulating
unease. Embracing a layered, dense disorientation, :Eta Carinae: moves
even
deeper into the morose jungles of dread, where stench and suspicion
are
sticky (as in humid, drenched in sweat) partners in the creation of
oppressive ambiences. The title track steers a groaning ship down a
crimson
river of swelling unease (I am reminded of the watery trek taken during
the
oblique, war-infested excursion of Apocalypse Now), in which splintered,
ghostly voices resonate with mystery. The waters are cut as straight
razors
would slice pulsing flesh (the sound slashes), the frazzled psyche laid
bare,
the portentous dread expanding through the dense sonic foliage. The
result
is very cinematic, and powerfully evocative!
