"Dhyon Chohane" tumbles like a
falling star burning in earth's epidermal atmosphere, while at the same time,
its lifeblood breathes like the deepest of caverns, exhalations from the
scoured larynx of the earth. The middle ground is occupied by pale moonlight
barely creeping through gnarled tree branches, the jungle alive with
merciless designs. "Eclipse" births strange, armored creatures that plod
through thick tufts of industrial disarray; creatures of ancient origin (the
hum of timelessness lingers like the chirp of agitated cicada), whose
existence is one of perpetual prowl: stop, hesitate, inspect, and shamble on,
constantly in motion. The gaping void of "Materia Prima," is splattered with
ragged sheets of metal brushed with static, weird clacking tones and the
shimmer of parchment thin (though somehow voluminous) voices (…maybe, or
maybe it's just some vague memory trigger…). An eerie thread of feedback
ties it all together at the end. Through multifarious sounds (they encompass
diverse qualities, from ancient to visceral to spiritual, amongst others)
Herbst9 creates a panoramic work of pitch-black intensity. With the release
of :Eta Caranae:, Herbst9 move to the forefront of dark sonic sculptors,
alongside Inade, Raison D'Etre, and a few more worthy practitioners. :Eta
Caranae: is a masterful work destined to be one of the top releases of 2001,
no doubt! (JCS: 9/10) JCS
